Dr. Harry S. Jacob, a Minnesota Egyetem (USA) professzorának díszdoktori avatása a Debreceni Egyetemen 2001. június 2.

 

Professor Harry Jacob graduated in medicine at Harvard Medical School, where his outstanding ten-year research career empowered him to be the head of the Department of Hematology at University of Minnesota in 1968. Within the institute he has been Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology since 1987 and Clark Research Professor of Medicine since 1992.

Professor Jacob enjoys the highest scientific reputation in medicine and hematology, he become the President-Elect of American Society of Hematology in 1997 and the President of American Society of Hematology in 1998. His contributions to the development of vascular biology, to the inflammatory cell and reactive oxygen species mediated vascular endothelial cell injury, particularly as it relates to atherosclerosis and respiratory failure syndrome, are high importance and invaluable for our understanding how endothelial cell pathophysiology changes in various vascular diseases. He published more than 200 hundred scientific papers published in the most respected journals including Science, Nature, PNAS, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, JAMA.

Professor Jacob has been elected to several leading position in scientific societies, editorial boards of scientific journals and professional committees. He served as president for the American Society of Clinical Investigation, American Society of Hematology, Central Society for Clinical Research, and Minneapolis Society of Internal Medicine. With his editorial positions at BLOOD, Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine, Seminars in Hematology, Hospital Practice, and being Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Laboratory and Clinical Medicine he has contributed to the progress of both clinical and basic research. As member of numerous scientific committees he launched the career of many young scientist. He has been honoured by more than 30 distinguished scientific awards, which would be too long to list.

The Department of Neonatology and Department of Internal Medicine of the University Medical School of Debrecen, predecessor of the University of Debrecen, have maintained a unique close relationship with doctor Harry Jacob and the University of Minnesota for more than a decade. Professor Jacob scientific work and his internationally recognized role in research, as well as his continuous collaboration with the University of Debrecen deserve the highest honour the University of Debrecen can confer upon him.
