Dr. Herbert Heyer (D) - IK, 2004. november 27.

Dr. Herbert Heyer, a Tübingeni Egyetem (Németország) professzorának díszdoktori avatása a Debreceni Egyetemen 2004. november 27.

Professor Herbert Heyer is a distinguished mathematician whose efforts have significantly advanced understanding of probability theory on algebraic structures as groups and hypergroups. He studied mathematics, physics, philosophy and pedagogy in Göttingen, Wien and Hamburg. He completed his PhD at the University of Hamburg in 1964, and his habilitation at the University of Erlangen in 1968. Since 1969 he has been Professor of Mathematics at the University of Tübingen. Professor Heyer's research focuses on limit theorems for arrays of probability measures on locally compact groups and hypergroups, but he is interested in abstract harmonic analysis, statistics, and Markov processes as well. He was visiting professor at many Universities all around the world. He organized the famous conferences ,,Probability Measures on Groups'' in Oberwolfach. He put forward seminal books and monographs on these topics. His findings has been reported in more than 100 publications. Two of his students became university professors, the others made carrier in applied mathematics (like insurance mathematics and financial mathematics), or in computer science. Professor Heyer visited Debrecen several times and developed a fruitful scientific collaboration with the Department of Applied Mathematics and Probability Theory at the University of Debrecen leading to many joint publications.
