Rankings

The University of Debrecen is continuously improving its position in several international higher education rankings, while maintaining its leading role among Hungarian higher education institutions.
Different rankings compile their own lists according to different criteria.
Institutions are evaluated on the basis of educational, research, academic results, quantitative indicators, or students, employers and partners are asked about their opinion.
The most important international higher education rankings are the following:

  • QS (Quacquarelli Symonds)
    • World University Rankings
      • 11 Hungarian universities were included in the latest, 2024 World University Rankings of QS. The University of Debrecen is ranked 671-680.
    • World University Rankings by Subject
      • In 2023, the programs of the University of Debrecen were ranked among the best on two broader subject lists (Life Sciences and Medicine, and Natural Sciences) and on five specific subject lists (Agriculture & Forestry, Medicine, Biological Sciences, Physics and Astronomys) of QS.
    • EECA University Rankings
      • QS ranked universities in emerging European and Central Asian countries under the name Emerging Europe and Central Asia (EECA). There are 16 universities from Hungary on the latest QS EECA list and there are 4 Hungarian universities among the top 40: Eötvös Loránd University was ranked 26th, the University of Szeged and Budapest University of Technology and Economics 29th, and the University of Debrecen was ranked 40th.
    • Graduate Employability Ranking
      • The University of Debrecen was included for the first time in the higher education ranking list of QS, Graduate Employability Ranking. UD was placed in the top 500 in the ranking based on employer perceptions, results of graduates and corporate networking
  • THE (Times Higher Education)
    • World University Rankings
      • 13 Hungarian universities are on the THE Word University Rankings among the more than 1900 ranked institutions, of which, Semmelweis University was ranked the highest, 251-300th place. The University of Debrecen is following it as the second-best Hungarian institutions, in the 601-800 category
    • Emerging Economies Rankings
      • Three Chinese universities lead the THE ranking and seven Chinese universities are placed in the top ten. In 2021, the University of Debrecen is on the 191st place.
    • Impact Rankings
      • Impact Rankings, the list of the renowned British ranking creator Times Higher Education, ranks the social and economic role and impact of higher education institutions along the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The University of Debrecen was examined in 6 of the 17 categories, and in each of them it was ranked among the best.
    • Europe Teaching Rankings
      • The University of Debrecen is ranked for the first time on the Europe Teaching Rankings 2019 list of Times Higher Education created based on educational excellence, in the 151-200th category.
    • Ranking by subject
      • In addition to the world university rankings, the British Times Higher Education (THE) publishes its thematic world rankings each year in 11 major subject areas. In its latest rankings, the University of Debrecen is among the best institutions in six thematic rankings.
  • UI GreenMetric World University Ranking
    • In 2023, the University of Indonesia assessed 1183 universities, within the framework of its ’GreenMetric’ project. They examined how ’green’ and environmentally conscious the individual institutions are. The University of Pécs, as the best Hungarian institution, was ranked 23rd, while the University of Debrecen was ranked 340th on the list.
  • Best Global Universities
    • Primarily, the academic recognition of higher education institutions is taken into account for the Best Global Universities list compiled by US News. The University of Debrecen was ranked 745th in the world
  • RUR (Round University Ranking)
    • World University Rankings
      • The University of Debrecen was ranked 423rd on the 2023 higher education world ranking of Round University Ranking (RUR), published in the spring by the Moscow-based independent organization.
        The world’s top 1200 universities are evaluated on the list, based on 20 factors in 4 core areas: education (40%), research (40%), international indicators (10%) and financial sustainability (10%).
    • Subject Rankings
      • Round University Ranking (RUR) Subject Rankings evaluate the performance of more than 800 of the world’s leading higher education institutions by 6 broad subject areas: humanities, life sciences, medical sciences, natural sciences, technical sciences and social sciences.
        The University of Debrecen was included in several thematic lists in 2023.
