The dual training program is a system in the practice-intensive bachelor’s programs and related master’s programs offered in the fields of engineering, informatics, agriculture, natural sciences and economics in which the practical/vocational part of the program’s curriculum (specified in line with the training and outcome requirements, for the full time of the program, and including stipulations regarding the program period, methodology, classes, and the evaluation of skills and knowledge acquired) is provided at a qualified organization, under conditions specified by the Dual Training Program Council. Thus the dual training program is such a practice-oriented higher education program offered by the higher education institution and the business sphere in collaboration, during which the students can acquire thorough knowledge about the world of work already during their university years, can experience and be part of work processes directly, and compared to the traditional forms of programs they can spend much more time with practicing professional skills and competences. In the dual program the teaching of theory is provided at the university, while practical training in the businesses partnering with the higher education institution. The university and the company or organization participating in the dual training program “share” the duties and the period of the training program. Students in the dual training program complete their studies during term time together with the “traditional”, full-time students at the institution of higher education (institutional phase). Then they participate in training and practice offered during the company phase. For the time of the company phase the students enter into a contractual relationship for work with the company and they are entitled to remuneration for their work, paid by the receiving company, during the whole year and for the entire length of the program.
