The Habilitation Procedure

Habilitation involves the assessment and evaluation of the skills and knowledge of instructors as teachers and presenters and their scholarly performance by the university. The university has the right to provide habilitation in those academic disciplines in which it is also entitled to run doctoral programs and grant doctoral degrees:

  • Biomedical Sciences
  • Business and Management
  • Chemical Sciences
  • Clinical Medicine
  • Crop Production and Horticulture
  • Earth Sciences
  • Education Sciences
  • Environmental Sciences
  • Ethnography, Folclore and Cultural Antropology
  • Health Sciences
  • History
  • Informatics
  • Legal Sciences
  • Linguistics
  • Literary and Cultural Studies
  • Mathematics and Computer Sciences
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences
  • Philosophy
  • Psycology

Habilitation can be awarded based on a completed habilitation procedure following application to the university. The university can grant habilitation to those people who

  • after acquiring a doctoral (PhD) degree contributed to the development of a particular discipline for at least five years with high quality academic activities and recognized scholarly achievements;
  • publish regularly, as verified by publications and references in prestigious international, peer-reviewed  journals considered authoritative in the given discipline (and uploaded into the MTMT [Hungarian Repository of Academic Publications] database) and who regularly participate as presenters in international and Hungarian academic events, and play an active role in public affairs related to the academic world;
  • can share and transfer their knowledge in a logical manner both in writing and speech, thus who have strong skills shaping the curriculum and transferring knowledge;
  • can share their knowledge in at least one foreign language besides their mother tongue;
  • teach regularly at a university, who have taught for at least eight semesters in a Hungarian or foreign institution of higher education.

The habilitation procedure can be conducted in Hungarian or upon request, and the approval of the Habilitation Committee of the given discipline, in one of the other languages of teaching at the university.
