The Times Higher Education (THE) world ranking only includes higher education institutions that offer bachelor's degrees and teach in more than one field of study. The rankings are compiled each year on the basis of the learning environment, the quality of research, the number of citations of publications attributable to the institution, market revenue and the number of international faculty and students. The first three criteria account for 30-30% of the final score, market income for 2.5% and internationality for 7.5%. The quality of the learning environment is assessed on the basis of a number of indicators, such as the proportion of teaching staff and students, the proportion of undergraduate and doctoral degrees, the proportion of postgraduate students and the institutional income. Research quality is measured by the academic reputation of the institution, the income generated by research and the number of publications. For internationality, three indicators are taken into account: the proportion of foreign faculty and students, and the number of publications with foreign co-authors.

Among the more than 1,700 ranked institutions on the 2026 list, 17 Hungarian universities were ranked, with Semmelweis University ranked 251-300. Eötvös Loránd University was ranked in the 801-1000 category, together with the University of Debrecen. This year, the University of Pécs, the University of Szeged and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences were ranked in the 1001-1200 category. The other ranked Hungarian universities were placed in the 1201-1500 and 1501+ categories.
