The Department of Medical Microbiology provides laboratory services to identify the etiology of infectious diseases. The Department has three divisions as follows: The Bacteriology Laboratory performs Clinical Bacteriology including enteric Bacteriology and hygienic environmental testing, using detection methods of both rapid diagnostics and microbial culture. The laboratory diagnostics of infections caused by yeasts and molds is also done here. The laboratory reports from this division specify the identified microbes and reports the antibiotic resistance of pathogen cultures according to the EUCAST guidelines. The Virology Laboratory is responsible for serological and nucleic acid-based diagnostics. These are requested primarily for the diagnosis of viral infections but testing of other pathogens takes place here, too. The Mycobacterium Laboratory is responsible for the detection of TB pathogens and their resistance to antituberculotic drugs.
The Department of Medical Microbiology provides specialist training and further education in the field of Medical Microbiology and in all other specialities where practice in laboratories of infectious diseases is an obligatory part of training. The staff of the Department of Medical Microbiology is permanently available for consultation, including recommendations and advising on the indications, timing, and pre-analytical requirements of tests provided in laboratories of infectious diseases, as well as the expected effective empirical antimicrobial therapy, the interpretation of partial and final results, the relationship between antimicrobial therapy and antibiotic resistance, strategies preventing the spread of resistance, and national availability of advanced laboratory tests.
