Day Surgery Center

The Day Surgery Center of the University of Debrecen is one of the largest day surgery units in the country. The management of the Day Surgery Center (ESK), which has been operating in the same location for more than 10 years, was taken over by the Clinical Center on January 1, 2020, as a result of the merger of the institutions. Patients with valid insurance and belonging to the institution in their area can use the service. The Center only treats cases financed by the National Health Insurance Fund (NEAK) and does not deal with reimbursed services.

Day surgery requires a treatment time of less than 24 hours; the patient, even for surgeries performed under anesthesia, usually leaves the institution on their own, with a companion, after 4-6 hours of observation following the surgery, and recovery takes place at home. In addition to the patient's underlying disease, the patient's general condition and concomitant diseases determine whether the procedure can be performed within the framework of day surgery. The advantage of day care is that the patient is exposed to less stress during the operation, and thus the hospital stay, which used to take several days, will be shortened to a few hours.

The Center has continuous nursing and medical presence, and if necessary, on-call and standby. Day surgery has strict professional, social and other legally regulated conditions, which are discussed during the consultation. After a preliminary examination and professional decisions (including consultation with the anesthesiologist in the case of anesthesia) on the selection of patients suitable for day surgery,

In our center, 172 doctors perform surgeries in 5 operating rooms in the professional groups of general surgery, traumatology/orthopedics, hand surgery, urology, and pain therapy.

We treat our patients in two departments on the Kenézy Gyula Campus, with a total of 32 beds, for which 23 specialists are available.

At our consultation clinic, our qualified nurses inform our patients about the specifics of day care and, in addition, they use a unique questionnaire method to determine the suitability of our patients for anesthesia. Our pain therapy service is constantly expanding, where we help musculoskeletal and cancer patients to live a pain-free life.

More than 4,000 surgeries are performed in our department every year. 6,000 patients visit our consultation clinic. Patient satisfaction indicators have been over 95% positive in recent years.
