Equal Opportunities Mentor Network

The Esély [Equal Opportunities] Mentor Network was established by the Center for Mental Health and Equal Opportunities with the aim of providing comprehensive support for disadvantaged, Roma, and disabled students (people with reduced mobility, the visually or hearing impaired, students diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or psychiatric problems) at the University of Debrecen. Our goal is to help these students have a better chance in realizing their full potential during their university studies. Services available within the mentor program:

  • office services (photocopying, printing, scanning, spiral binding),
  • rental of tools supporting learning,
  • note-taking services,
  • coordination of student helper services,
  • organization of recreational programs and workshops,
  • providing transportation services,
  • personal assistance,
  • consultation in connection with job searching and employment,
  • academic mentoring
  • consultation with instructors.
Support for studies

In line with the Act on National Higher Education, the government degree on the execution of this act, and the regulations of the university, students with disabilities have the following supporting options:

  • they can request additional time for exam or test preparation,
  • they can ask for a written exam instead of an oral one and vice versa,
  • they can get certain practical subjects accepted,
  • they can request technical or personal help,
  • in cases specified by law (expert opinion) they can be exempted from some or all of the language exam requirements,
  • they can request note-taking or student helper services.

Students can ask for help in connection with administrative tasks related to their studies and requests from the faculty coordinator responsible for helping students with disabilities.

Transportation service

A suitable transportation vehicle (Ford Transit minibus with ramp, 5-point safety harness) operated by the Lelkierő Association is available and it provides transportation services for people with special needs to travel between the campuses, get access to public services, healthcare, and social care as well as recreational and cultural activities on weekdays. Those planning to use the service can notify us from 8 AM to 4 PM on every workday.

Personal assistance

The personal assistance service provides help for people with special needs including the following:

  • special care,
  • help in the living environment,
  • customized help in special situations,
  • help with administrative duties,
  • help with the household duties,
  • administrative help, advising if needed,
  • contact with associated organizations and services,
  • help with buying or renting medical devices,
  • consultation related to employment and finding a job,
  • coaching, psychological consultation.

Assistance is always customized and is provided in a planned way that focuses on the areas to be developed. The personal helper assists in fulfilling the physical, mental, and social needs of the user of the service.

Counseling, providing information

Using the available and continuously updated database, people with special needs are informed about relevant events, services, allowances, and forms of assistance. In case we are not able to provide information, we contact the competent person or authority.

The listed services are available for students of the University of Debrecen free of charge, however, prior registration is required. The forms have to be filled in and submitted in person at the center.
