The Department of Cardiac Surgery has been a member of the network of European Health Promoting Hospitals since 1995, which means that it maintains contact with its patients even after the cardiac surgery and they thus participate in life-long rehabilitation.
In 1996, under the leadership of head physician Dr. Sándor Horváth working at the Department of Cardiac Surgery, the Debrecen Heart Association was established as a civil organization. Its objective is to help patients preserve their recovered health, improve their quality of life, and to facilitate their return to their original job.
The Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen Teaching Hospital has been organizing its program titled “The Day of our Heart” successfully for years in collaboration with national events. The physicians and health care professionals of the cardiac surgery department are also actively involved in screening programs.
The early rehabilitation of patients who have had cardiac surgery at the department starts already in intensive care with the help of physiotherapists, then after the patients leave the hospital the physiotherapy outpatient clinic facilitates the return of patients to their daily tasks.
The continuous training of our physicians and healthcare staff is a priority for us, thus our colleagues regularly participate in Hungarian and international cardiac surgery congresses and training programs both as presenters and participants.
