Department of Sports Health

The Sports Medicine Clinic of the University of Debrecen was established in 2019 with the aim of providing high-quality, comprehensive care for elite athletes, recreational sports participants, and patients suffering from musculoskeletal disorders. As part of the Clinical Centre of the University of Debrecen, the clinic integrates medical science, sport science, and lifestyle medicine within a multidisciplinary healthcare framework.

Since its foundation, the clinic has been led by Dr. Sándor Szántó, Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, who holds specialist qualifications in internal medicine, rheumatology, clinical pharmacology, and sports medicine. His professional and scientific work focuses on the prevention of musculoskeletal diseases, optimization of athletic performance, and rehabilitation after sports injuries. A key role in the clinic’s professional and educational activities is played by Dr. Zsuzsanna Gyurcsik Némethné, who coordinates physiotherapy and movement analysis programs and actively contributes to teaching and research projects.

Over the past years, the clinic has significantly expanded its diagnostic and therapeutic capacities. Modern imaging and sports diagnostic technologies—including X-ray, ultrasound, spiroergometry, motion analysis systems, and body composition measurement devices—support patient assessment and performance testing. Advanced physiotherapy equipment, such as cryotherapy and shockwave therapy devices, is also available. The clinic operates within the infrastructure of the Sports Diagnostic, Lifestyle and Therapy Centre, which provides a nationally outstanding technological background for both clinical care and research.

Research activities focus on the molecular and physiological background of athletic performance as well as on the prevention and treatment of sports injuries and overuse syndromes. Staff members are actively involved in scientific publishing, PhD training, and the supervision of graduate and student research projects. The clinic also maintains close cooperation with national scientific bodies, including the Musculoskeletal and Sports Science Committee of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

In clinical practice, the clinic provides sports medical eligibility examinations, performance diagnostics, and movement analysis while playing an important role in post-injury rehabilitation. Its specialists have participated in the medical support of several major international sporting events, including world championships and European championships. The clinic’s mission is to promote prevention-oriented sports medicine, safe athletic participation, and efficient recovery, while offering patient-centered care and comprehensive lifestyle guidance that supports long-term health and sustainable performanc
