Department of Pathology

Our institute is one of the largest and most comprehensive Pathology Institutes in the country. Operating across three campuses — the Nagyerdei Campus, the Kenézy Gyula Campus, and the Gróf Tisza István Campus — we conduct tens of thousands of examinations each year across various diagnostic specialties, ensuring fast, precise, and reliable diagnoses.

Our specialists actively participate in multidisciplinary medical teams managing oncology patients and provide expert consultation at a regional level. With our extensive expertise, we support effective patient care, while our modern equipment and advanced laboratory technology are complemented by continuous internal and external quality control.

Our team engages in regular professional training to maintain and continuously enhance the highest standards of patient care.

Our Services

  • Histopathology
    • Histopathological examination involves the microscopic analysis of tissues removed during surgery or other medical procedures. This enables accurate differentiation between inflammatory conditions, benign lesions, and malignant tumors. When required, rapid intraoperative (frozen section) examinations are performed to assist surgical decision-making in real time.
  • Cytology
    • Cytological diagnostics focus on the evaluation of cellular changes, allowing early detection of various diseases, particularly oncological and inflammatory conditions.
    • Services include:
      • Gynecological screening (Pap tests)
      • Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC)
  • Molecular Diagnostics
    • Molecular diagnostics is one of the fastest-growing areas of modern pathology. By analyzing the genetic background of tumors and other diseases, we can more precisely classify lesions and support personalized treatment strategies. While conventional microscopy reveals the structural appearance of a lesion, molecular testing provides insight into its biological behavior and genetic alterations. Our laboratory utilizes state-of-the-art technologies for the detection of DNA and RNA abnormalities, including:
      • Gene mutation analysis
      • Chromosomal abnormality detection
      • Identification of specific molecular markers
      • Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH)
  • Autopsy Services
    • Autopsies are performed to accurately determine the cause of death and to identify underlying disease processes. Beyond establishing the immediate cause, these examinations provide valuable medical insight and contribute to the continuous improvement of healthcare quality.

Education

In addition to diagnostic activities, the staff of our institute are actively involved in education.

As part of the third-year curriculum, we teach pathology in both Hungarian and English to students of the following programs:

  • General Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Pharmacy

Furthermore, we provide education in the field of pathology for students enrolled in physiotherapy and various specialized laboratory analyst programs.
