The predecessor of the University Pharmacy of the Clinical Centre at the University of Debrecen began its operation on the 1st of April in 1924, in the DEMKE building at Bocskai Square. Its mission was to supply the clinics and theoretical institutes, as well as the Horthy Miklós Public Hospital, with medicines and chemicals, serving approximately 800 patients daily.
Today, the pharmacy operates in a three-story, 1,580 m² building within the Clinical Centre, inaugurated in autumn 2001. It currently ensures safe, professional, continuous, and cost-effective pharmaceutical supply for nearly 2,800 inpatient beds, and provides the necessary information on medication use for inpatient care units as part of preventive and curative activities.
From January 2022, the merger of the Nagyerdei Campus Pharmacy and the Kenézy Gyula Campus Pharmacy resulted in the establishment of the University Pharmacy, followed in July 2023 by the integration of the institutional pharmacy of the Gróf Tisza István Campus in Berettyóújfalu.
Since November 2023, after the reorganization of logistical processes, centralized pharmaceutical supply for the Nagyerdei and Kenézy Gyula Campuses has been managed from the headquarters of the University Pharmacy.
Scope of Activities
- In addition to ordering (and compounding), storing, distributing, and controlling industrial and magistral medicinal products, the institutional pharmacy is also responsible for the procurement of medical gases, foods for special medical purposes, blood products, serobacteriological agents, diagnostics, and pharmaceutical raw materials.
- Beyond its core activities, pharmacy staff provide patient-specific unit-dose dispensing and bedside pharmaceutical counseling at several clinics. Clinical pharmacists conduct medication history reviews, evaluate pharmacotherapies, and support therapeutic decision-making.
- Since May 2017, software-assisted preparation of cytostatic infusion mixtures has played a key role in oncology care; from August 2025 this process has been supported by an automated cytostatic compounding robot.
- The institutional pharmacy participates in the procurement and dispensing of special-fund medicines used in the treatment of hepatitis C and hemophilia for outpatients, as well as in the logistics and administration of high-value, itemized reimbursed medicinal products.
- The pharmacy also plays a prominent and essential role in human clinical pharmacology trials.
- At the Gróf Tisza István Campus, the Herpály Pharmacy provides direct pharmaceutical services to the public.
- In addition, participation in graduate and postgraduate pharmacist training is part of daily routine. Fifth-year pharmacy students acquire the theoretical and practical foundations of hospital and clinical pharmacy here, and many specialist pharmacist trainees complete their mandatory professional practice at the institution.
