The Department of Gastroenterology, established in 2021, is dedicated to the care of patients with various diseases of the digestive tract, pancreas, biliary tract and liver.
In addition to endoscopic examinations of the upper and lower digestive tract, procedures such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), stent insertions, endoscopic ultrasound, small bowel endoscopy and capsule endoscopy are also carried out.
Patients with inflammatory bowel disease have the option of biological therapy if standard treatment proves ineffective.
Our department participates in the national colorectal screening programme and provides oncological care for digestive tract conditions.
We are the leading centre of the country for acute and chronic liver diseases with two “European Reference Centre” accreditations.
We are also involved in the Post-COVID Outpatient Network for patients with gastroenterological and hepatological problems, aiming to enhance the digestive symptoms of patients recovering from COVID infection.
There are two inpatient wards. The 48-bed inpatient unit can be found in the Emergency and Gastroenterology Building on the Nagyerdei Campus. It is also home to the hepatology outpatient clinic for patients with liver diseases, the liver elastography laboratory, the emergency gastroenterology outpatient clinic and the post-COVID (gastroenterology) outpatient clinic.
Our other, 20-bed inpatient unit is located on the Kenézy Gyula Campus. Within this Campus, our general gastroenterology outpatient clinics are situated in the Outpatient Care Block. One of the department's endoscopy laboratories, equipped for upper and lower GI tract and biliary tract procedures, is situated here, while the other laboratory can be found in the basement of the Building B of the Institute of Internal Medicine.
Capsule endoscopy and double balloon enteroscopy are the only options available here in our region, therefore we play an important role in the diagnosis of bleeding patients. We also conduct endoscopic ultrasound and perform self-expanding metal stent implantation, which is vital for the palliative care of patients with cancer.
The outpatient clinics for biological therapy and for celiac and food allergy are located in the basement of Building B as well. As an IBD regional centre, we provide care for patients with complicated inflammatory bowel disease in close collaboration with the Institution of Surgery.
To hasten patient care, we run a gastroenterology outpatient clinic for the first-time patients at the Bethlen Street Outpatient Department. Our internal medicine specialists conduct patient evaluations here before referring patients to advanced gastroenterology examinations.
