Department of Ophthalmology

The Department of Ophthalmology at the Clinical Center of the University of Debrecen Teaching Hospital provides ophthalmology services for outpatients and inpatients, two million residents in two administrative regions (Northern Great Plain and Northern Hungary) and six counties at the highest level of progressivity. At the same time, it also has national responsibilities in corneal transplants, special anti-myopia surgeries, and the radiotherapy of malignant tumors in the eye. In the latter field, our services provided on an international level are also significant.  Cancer patients are sent to our institute in great numbers from Ukraine, Romania, and Serbia. The further education trainings of the Department of Ophthalmology in Debrecen are very popular. Besides the hospitals and clinics of the two regions, specialists participate in our individual and group training programs from the capital, western Hungary, and even from abroad. The waiting lists and the list of appointments are well below the national average at our department, while the qualitative indicators of the effectiveness of healing work at the department are well above the Hungarian average. The scholarly and innovative work of the physicians at the department is internationally competitive, as well exemplified by the grants won and the numerous Hungarian and international awards received.
