The department is responsible for general histopathology, molecular pathology, pathology, cytology, hematology, and autopsy. It also participates in the work of teams making decisions on the treatment of cancer. It provides consultation services on a regional level. Besides these, it is involved in teaching and research related to the field of pathology.
Pathology is a main diagnostic branch of medicine, studying the tissue changes due to diseases and their causes. As part of our diagnostic activities, our staff performs more than 20,000 histological, 4,000 molecular, 4,500 gynecological, and 500 aspiration cytologic examinations.
- Histopathology: it focuses on the examination of tissue removed during medical procedures to study the manifestations of a disease (tumor, non-tumor, benign or malignant, etc.). The intraoperative histopathological examinations are indispensable for the adequate surgical treatment of certain abnormalities.
- Cytology: “It is the study of cellular level changes to learn about the diseases of the cell.”
- Department of molecular pathology: the methods used in the department of molecular pathology are suitable for the more exact biological characterization of certain abnormalities, with their help the prognosis and/or sensitivity of tumors can be established for certain targeted therapies.
- Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH): With the fluorescent probes bound to the chromosomes this method is suitable for the study of the structural and quantitative changes in the DNA that characterize certain diseases.
- Autopsy: Final medical examination which can reveal not only the direct cause of death but can provide information also about the disease(s) leading to it thus providing invaluable feedback for the attending physician.
- We use a transparent system for the support of diagnostic procedures connected to the above mentioned healing work, there is continuous quality assurance available which is also facilitated by internal and external (international) monitoring. At the same time, continuous training is provided for the staff of the department and the purchase of devices used internationally also contribute to professional development.
