Department of Internal Medicine

The Department of Internal Medicine founded in 1921 is operated in four buildings at the Clinical Department of the University of Debrecen Teaching Hospital. Care is provided for close to twenty thousand inpatients and more than one hundred thousand outpatients annually. During the last decades, simultaneously with the development of medicine, the profile of our department has been specialized in numerous areas and by now it works to improve the condition of patients in a dozen subfields of internal specialties.

It is a key priority for our department to fight against the common and widespread diseases of our age within the field of traditional general internal medicine (metabolic diseases, arteriosclerosis, high-blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, eating and digestive disorders, and kidney diseases). Besides these, the profile of our department also features numerous special fields of internal medicine, including specialist care for angiology, lipid metabolism, thyroid, hematology, immunology, nephrology, gastroenterological and cardiac diseases. We are specialized in treating patients with rare diseases that affect maximum five people out of a population of ten thousand (rare diseases). Specialist care for problems specific to old age is also provided by our department.

Our Emergency Unit deals with the immediate primary care of outpatients with severe problems emerging suddenly and unexpectedly while our Intensive Care Unit provides care for severe internal medicine inpatients.

Our department includes eleven academic departments related to the listed specializations. Our specialists are involved in the teaching of medical students in the field and in scholarly research.
